I think the point you make about the learning center booth is a good one. I had two slots there as well, and except for the one person who came by (whom you helped out), I might as well as not been there. It was still good to use that time to get to know a few other people, but I think a learning center such as this is most effective when it's open outside of the main conference. Because really, who's going to leave the main panels/sessions to go by a booth? But as your post pointed out, it's a great idea and one other conference organizers would do well to emulate.
