Weekly Roundup: The Really Useful Edition

March 20th, 2011 | Shonali Burke | 9 Comments

What with birthing a new blog, helping a new client get started on their digital initiatives and attending the Google for Nonprofits event this week, I had a ton of useful information coming my way.

Spinning wheel, meet head. Whew!

So this week’s roundup consists of posts I’ve found really useful.

I hope you will too.

Let’s get right to it.

1. Secrets to becoming a photo editor, by Mollie Megasko over at Spin Sucks.

Why: I’ve always wanted to play with images, but not being a designer has kept me in a bit of a closet. After playing with Pixlr, I think I’m addicted.

2. Don’t search for your four-leaf clover, by Matt LaCasse.

Why: Matt’s post gave me a much-needed boot in the butt to stop dreaming about winning the lottery (ok, to stop dreaming quite so often of winning the lottery) and making my own.

3. Recipe for successful blog marketing & SEO at TECHmunch Austin 2011, by Lee Odden.

Why: Lee could pretty much read the phone book and I’d listen, but this is an incredibly simple and effective deck and post on the right way to start, produce and market a blog.

4. 101 free SEO tips, from DIYSEO.

Why: Dude, there are 101 tips here. Do you really need to ask?!

5. Are your tweets timely?, by Ingrid Abboud.

Why: Everyone’s looking for the magic button that will drive engagement, right? Check out Ingrid’s thoughts on Timely.

6. A scorecard on the 7 blogging essentials, from Mark Schaefer‘s {grow}.

Why: Mark puts what’s important about blogging nicely into perspective. A good starter list.

7. Google launches Google for Nonprofits, by Beth Kanter.

Why: this is probably one of the most significant moves Google has made as far as nonprofits go, and I think it will help a lot of them. Beth’s recap is great.

There you go.

What really useful stuff have you found this week? I’d love to know.

Read the post at Mark's, skimmed a few others. Totally checking out the SEO thing and Lee's blog marketing. And loved Ingrid's post, especially the discussion.

Thanks for the shout out! I hope the photo editing tips helps. P.S. I love number seven as well.

Thanks for the 101 tips mention!
