Giving Props to Propz via #propz

April 29th, 2011 | Shonali Burke | 21 Comments

I came across something quite cool the other day.

Actually, it was just the day before yesterday, when Derek Skaletsky gave me props (aww) for saying I think Traackr is quite a bit more useful—at least as far as I’m concerned—than Klout, if one is trying to find “influencers.”

I didn’t know this (or know him) at the time, but Derek is part of the Traackr team.

So obviously he’d be happy about that.

However!

He is also the guy behind #propz, which is a very cool way to do just that – give props to people (and, I suspect, organizations) through social media.

You see, all you have to do is include the #propz hashtag in a tweet, and they (the person and your #propz props #propz props … sigh …) will show up on the Propz site.

As well as Twitter.

And, obviously, everyone knows what that means.

Props, I mean, not Twitter.

You can also do so directly at the Propz site, but if the person you’re trying to give props to hasn’t already been “propped,” then you’ll have to fill out their info such as Twitter profile, etc.

So for now, while Propz is still relatively new, it’s easier to just give #propz on Twitter, because then their profile will automatically get created on the site.

And the notification will show up in their Twitter stream, and they’ll be curious, and they’ll go across and claim their profile (which is, no doubt, what Propz wants) …

… but you won’t have to do anything else!

Even though I am new to #propz, I think it’s a cool way to show appreciation … not to mention, very easy to do.

In fact, ever since I saw it, I’ve been thinking of all the people I could give #propz to.

Don’t worry, I won’t start going down a list.

But I will be giving them props #propz … oh boy.

Try it out and tell me what you think?

Thanks for writing this Shonali@propz until you gave me some this morning during MeasurePR. Then their tweets immediately showed up in my stream. Have to say I checked to make sure it wasn't spam and that got me to your post. I really like this idea and think it's a great way to say a quick thanks to people. I hope it doesn't get all spammy and smarmy though.

Shonali, every time I pop over here (this time via Gini's post on the Royal Wedding and then from there to BNET and then back to here and then....well, I lost track, but it's been a delightful journey!) I learn something new! I love that! Your blog is now prominently displayed on my iGoogle page and I shall not miss another great tip again - #propz to you for a continued job well done!

EricaAllison That sounds like quite a journey... but it also sounds like it was worth your while, so I'm glad for that. Thank you so much!

Shonali I had to Google that, still not sure what it means. But with the smiley face, I'll take it as a good thing. :-)

3HatsComm LOL. It's my shorthand for "my pleasure."

LOL at your issues trying to figure out whether/when to say props or propz. :) Enjoyed your writing as always and thank you for yet another tip.

Tinu I had fun writing it like that, and I'm glad I was able to give you a giggle. Thank you!

This is a cute idea... social media can feel so alienating sometimes, when you send tweets out into the world and they just seem to disappear! Quick question though... what are the rules? I have #propz on my handle from lianemarie telling me about it... does it only show up on the propz.me site if it isn't an @ reply?

lianemarie 6 pts

jennstaz Actually, it should show up on propz.me but for some reason Twitter isn't indexing all of my Tweets. You should be able to propz someone directly on propz.me or on Twitter using the propz hashtag.

Ok, thanks for letting me know! lianemarie

jennstaz lianemarie Hi Jenn -- welcome to Propz! You can learn more about it here: http://propz-me.tumblr.com/ but quick answer is if you send a tweet with #propz and a @ handle, then your propz will be registered on Propz.me. You can also give propz right on the site.

Be careful, though. You only have 20 Propz that you can give out per week. Your "bank" resets on Sunday at midnight...

Very happy to have you on board!

jennstaz I was going to reply and then I saw lianemarie and dskaletsky beat me to it. Hope you have fun giving out #propz!

I need to check this out! But I also think it can be gamed! So going to try.

Shonali 1123 pts

HowieSPM Well, if anyone can game it, you can. I'm sure dskaletsky will need to be on his toes around you!

HowieSPM 1915 pts

Shonali dskaletsky so my next question is can people give themselves propz from multiple accounts?

dskaletsky 11 pts

HowieSPM Shonali dskaletsky Sure. If you want to create multiple profiles (so long as they don't share any similar twitter/facebook accounts), then you can give propz to each profile from the other ones. But, I can't imagine why someone would be so shallow to do that :)

To that point, though. You can actually give propz to yourself if you want. We didn't eliminate that option. There's a penalty involved when you do, though...
