The Motorola XOOM: A Revolutionary Tool

XOOMing in

I was recently given the opportunity to use a Motorola XOOM for almost 3 months by my good friend Mark Farnen, whose client is Verizon Wireless (Verizon is the carrier providing 3G/4G service for the XOOM).

Going into my trial, I wanted to see if I could effectively make a tablet like the XOOM my computer. I quickly realized that wasn’t going to be the case, but that’s nothing against the XOOM.

This is because the screen (which is HUGE, in the ballpark of 10.1″) has a keyboard that is smaller than the standard size. So typing is essentially hunt and peck, or using your thumbs as you would on your phone. Neither is conducive to getting work done.

But that’s OK.

I realized that the XOOM isn’t designed to replace your laptop; it’s meant to enhance your online experience. I used the XOOM several times to show my kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri different videos on YouTube, impromptu discussion of how using Facebook and Twitter can be a part of a job, and that the Internet is more than just a place to find video games to play.

The Brand View When Looking For a PR Pro

May 27th, 2011 | Howie Goldfarb | 11 Comments

This is Part 1 of a two-post series

I have a client – a gourmet dessert brand – that considers me its Director of Marketing.

So I was asked to interview six PR pros who would work to expand the brand and product exposure, primarily from a publicity point of view. (For your frame of reference, I’m based in upstate New York and my client is in Los Angeles.)

I did reference Gini Dietrich‘s blog post of what to look for in a PR pro/agency when hiring one. After we chose one, it did not go very well. And we had to let them go and we hired the person who was runner-up.

Guess what? So far they’ve turned out very well. (Part 2 of this post will be what went wrong with Numero Uno and what could have been done to prevent this from not working.)

Here’s what we were looking for and tips on rocking the interview:

BWE Cares About Joplin. Will You Help?

May 26th, 2011 | Shonali Burke | 2 Comments

I’ve been having a blast here in NYC at BlogWorld and New Media Expo. From catching up with old friends, to making new ones, to meeting online friends and delighting in the fact that they are exactly as they seem to be online… but more! … I’ve loved my experience here.

As I publish this, it’s 13 minutes to the closing keynote and a saxophone is being tuned on stage. Looks like it will be quite a party as BWE closes shop for a few months, and I, along with several hundred others, are getting ready to enjoy it.

But as we do, it’s important to remember not everyone is this fortunate. As we did our meet and greets over the last few days, we couldn’t help but remember the weather disasters that have most recently wreaked havoc in Joplin, Miss. People have lost so much – their homes, their lives – and I’m asking you to help, if you can. Please.

All of us here at BWE are trying to help raise funds for those devastated by this latest series of disasters. And you can too, by donating to the #BWECares fundraiser, that’s been set up to help the Red Cross help tornado victims. We’re trying to raise $5,000 by the end of the week, and all proceeds benefit the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
