where's your real face?!Yesterday, Shanan Sorochynski asked a question here on WUL that struck a chord with quite a few people: “Are you using social media to talk to yourself?

The comments are really interesting, and even though I mentioned it in my comment, it reminded me of Mary Barber’s post (also published yesterday) where she pondered aloud on whether we all see the world through our own respective filters.

My short answer: yes, but that’s not what I was thinking about when I sat down to write today’s post.

How Long Can We Get Away With It?

facebook promotionsIn the first half of 2011, Facebook’s revenue hit US$1.6 billion.

How much of that revenue comes from tiny Malta? I would guess that it’s probably not more than 0.05 per cent, making us barely a blip on the radar.

As we know, being the small guy hidden away in the corner can have its advantages. While Facebook is busy elsewhere, Maltese companies have been busy taking the opportunity to experiment and develop campaigns and promotions, many of which pay little or no regard to the promotions guidelines.

This ability for the small fry (and some not so small) to just go ahead and, for example, use the “Like” function as a voting mechanism in a competition is not just a problem in Malta.

It’s obvious that there are simply too many promotions going on for Facebook to keep track.

Weekly Roundup: While I Was Out

suitcasesLike all good things, my vacation (such as it was, I didn’t go anywhere but needed to take some time off, which I did… mostly) must come to an end.

Since I was on vacation, I didn’t do very much online. And, as a result, my Google Reader has been mostly untouched. So there is a lot for me to catch up on.
