Managing Negative Comments in Social Media

If you work as a social media manager or online community manager you see these all the time … negative comments. When you see them you try at first to plan how to respond, but sometimes have a strong urge to react.
The best tip I can give: don’t take them personally. You’ll run out of energy if you do this.

Articles like this annoy me.
It’s not because it disagrees with my sensibilities (though it does), nor because I have a particular affection for Twitter (though I do).
It’s because it’s simply ill-thought out – another piece bashing the use of social media, without actually having engaged with the concept.
The author has a Twitter account, I’ll grant him that, but by the looks of it, doesn’t actually engage with anyone.

A few days ago, my pal Geoff Livingston tagged me in his meme, Ways to Increase Your Twitter Following Ethically.
When Geoff tags, you play (image: ClintJCL‘s Flickrstream, Creative Commons). But given the folks I was tagged with, such as Ike Pigott, John Haydon, Lauren Vargas, Allyson Kapin and Shashi Bellamkonda, all of whom I hold in high regard, I was left scratching my head as to how I could contribute without being repetitive.
Today, I had the perfect experience to set me off.
The last few days, I’ve been on the receiving end of tweets from complete strangers, demanding I follow them. How? By sending me an @ message saying, “FOLLOW ME!”
Er… why? Because you say so?
