The #MeasurePR chat on December 6 was a free-wheeling smorgasbord of terrific measurement topics, from what the community thinks will be hot measurement trends next year to which free tools we love the most.

The discussion kicked off with a great question from Deanna Boss, who wanted to know: “What does 2012 look like for #measurepr? New trends? Saying goodbye to bad habits? Any goals?”

  • Shonali kicked things off, predicting a growth in the number of those who will offer analytics. John Trader added, no more blank checks:

On Engagement, Ashton Kutcher and Pet Rocks

Ashton Kutcher has for a while been the darling of the social media/celebrity Twitter set. His Twitter account has more than 8 million followers, and perhaps most surprisingly to some, he has been the one tweeting.

Until recently.

After tweeting out an amazingly ill-informed defense of Penn State coach Joe Paterno (Mr. Kutcher says he was unaware of the scandal surrounding the firing, and assumed it was due to “football related issues”), he decided to turn over the management of his Twitter account to marketing agency Katalyst.

So now we have the requisite wailing and gnashing of teeth over how horrible it is that Ashton Kutcher will no longer be tweeting—at least, not without a filter. (I’m not exaggerating, just check out Ashton Kutcher is making a big Twitter mistake and Why would you ever want to outsource your voice?)

Picking the Right Measurement Tools: a #measurePR Recap

On October 11, the #measurePR chat had a terrific guest in Don Bartholomew of Fleishman-Hillard.

Don recently published an ebook on picking the right monitoring tool for successful measurement and he graciously joined the chat to discuss what we should—and should not—do when faced with picking a tool.

Here’s how the chat went:

  • The discussion kicked off with Don explaining the first steps in assessing a tool, with the most important first step being to define your strategy and approach BEFORE (emphasis Don’s!) tool selection begins.
