Business Lessons Learned from Fishing

Drum FishFive years ago you would never have caught me near a fishing pole. But, when my husband first suggested we take up fishing a couple years ago, I figured I had nothing to lose. I was pregnant with my daughter at the time, and there wasn’t much physical activity I could do. So even though I was squeamish, an activity that involved a lot of sitting seemed like a good one to me.

Today fishing is my number one hobby. I am also surprisingly good at it for someone who bought their first pole in 2011. There have been many nights I have out-fished my husband, who actually grew up with a fishing pole in his hand.

Instagram LogoFor the past few months, my friend Ryan has been managing a boutique in a nearby shopping center called Apricot Lane. I know 80-90% of the stores in this area are out of my price range and, because they are so expensive, their typical customers are more likely to be women in my mom’s age group.

I assumed that Apricot Lane was another boutique with clothes for women older than myself. That is… until Ryan started an Instagram for the boutique. She posted photos of the clothes, jewelry, and new items on Instagram. She even posted photos of people I knew modeling the clothes.

I fell in love with the different styles and fun items. I realized my preconceived notions were wrong, and I was quickly convinced that I needed to visit the boutique. Not only did I visit, I brought my mom and sister with me, both of whom loved it.

Perhaps it was an episode of Extreme Couponers or the explosion of social commerce sites such as Groupon that sparked my addiction to a good deal, but either way, I’m hooked on them.

One night in February I was perusing Groupon and found deals galore capitalizing on the upcoming holiday. As any good female friend should do, I reminded my clueless friend Steve that Valentine’s Day was around the corner.

Steve had been dating his girlfriend for a couple months and neither of them struck me as the typical flower type; so I was thrilled to have found what I thought was the perfect Valentine’s Day deal for him – Fancy Fortune Cookies.
